Petra Kvitova surges, wins Dubai Tennis Championships 2013 title

Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova emerged as the champion of the Dubai Tennis Championships 2013 tournament on Sunday after winning the final match against Sara Errani of Italy 6-2, 1-6, 6-1. This is Kvitova’s 10th career title.

The title win has helped Kvitova surged a bit in the women’s rankings. By winning the title, Kvitova moves one step up from number 8 to 7 when the rankings are released on Monday. Errani, on the other hand, will step down to 8 from 7.

“I knew I had to keep fighting for every ball, because she was really on fire in the second set and continued that in the third too,” Kvitova said. “I was just thinking to not give up and just fight for every point. When it was 2-1 and she missed a volley, and I think that was a turning point for me.

“I was quite down after the second set. I just tried to stay positive and just play.”

The draw of the Dubai Tennis Championships was impressive with returning world number one Serena Williams and number two Victoria Azarenka in the field. However, both had pulled out early in the tournament due to injuries.
