Roger Federer could lose number two ranking with early loss in Indian Wells

Roger Federer could potentially lose the world number two ranking at the conclusion of the BNP Paribas Open 2013 tournament in Indian Wells if he loses early in this event. The Swiss tennis star is the defending champion this tournament which means he is also defending the 1,000 ranking points that goes to being the reigning champion of this hardcourt competition.

Andy Murray, who lost in this tournament early last year, could overtake Federer if he reaches the final and Federer loses prior to the semifinals.

Federer rose to number one last year after winning his seventh Wimbledon title. So far he’s been losing ranking points after failing to defend his titles in Rotterdam and Dubai.

Murray was ranked as high as number two in August 2009 but only for a span of four weeks.

Murray is guaranteed the number two ranking if he wins the Indian Wells title for the first time.
