Lukas Rosol clinches first ATP title in Bucharest

Czech tennis player Lukas Rosol garnered significant media mileage in 2012 by eliminating Rafael Nadal in the second round of Wimbledon Championships but this time, he can say that he’s also an ATP World TOur title holder.

On Sunday, Rosol won the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest, Romania, defeating Guillermo Garcia- Lopez 6-3, 6-2. The match lasted 67 minutes and during the awarding ceremony, Rosol dedicated the win to his father, who passed away ten days ago.

“I wanted to dedicate this trophy to someone, so I found the energy. I felt somebody was helping me from up top. It’s not just about me. My family has always supported me and my tennis. I felt match after match, my dream was coming true,” Rosol said.

“It could not be better this week. I came here from a full two weeks of practice. I didn’t know what to expect of myself. So I’m pretty satisfied with this result… I will remember this week. It was very emotional for me and is something special. I found a way to beat some good players and succeed,” he added.

Rosol became the 3rd first-time champion this 2013 season. He joined Bernard Tomic (Sydney International) and Horacio Zeballos (Chile). It was an impressive run to the final for Rosol, who overcame three seeded players along the way including three-time winner Gilles Simon in the semifinals.

The title win elevated Rosol’s ranking to number 35.
