Mercedes Cup to become grasscourt event in 2015, a good lead up to Wimbledon

The top officials of the ATP 250 Mercedes Cup tournament announced that construction of grasscourts in Stuttgart will commence after the conclusion of this year’s edition of the tournament. The Mercedes Cup is a claycourt event that takes place usually after the Wimbledon tournament. The 2013 edition will take place from July 6 to 14. By 2015, the tournament will take place the week after the Roland Garros tournament.

“The future starts now!” said Edwin Weindorfer, the MercedesCup Tournament Director, during a press conference in Stuttgart City Hall this week.

“The switch to grass courts opens many interesting perspectives for the MercedesCup and starts a new era of the tournament,” he added.

Aside from this conversion, the prize money will also increase to a total of 600,000 euros by 2015.
