Rafael Nadal may get higher Roland Garros seeding

Currently ranked number five in the world, Rafael Nadal‘s seeding at the upcoming Roland Garros 2013 tournament may be upgraded to at least number four, that is, if the endorsement of French Open committee member and former French Davis Cup captain Guy Forget is accepted.

In an interview with Reuters, Forget said that the tournament should consider granting a higher seeding for Nadal considering that he has won a record 7 French Open titles.

Nadal trailed fourth-ranked David Ferrer in the rankings and it is unlikely that he can overtake his compatriot in time for the French Open. The 11-time Grand Slam champion has 1,590 points to defend prior to the claycourt Slam while Ferrer needs to defend 830 points.

Should the original rankings hold, Nadal could meet top-ranked Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.

“Since we can see them meeting in the finals of the biggest events in the next weeks, it would be a shame to have them [meet] in a quarterfinal in Roland Garros,” Forget said.

“The rules state the Grand Slam events have the right to change the seeding regarding the situation of the players. Wimbledon has done that in the past. I would not find it illogical to change the seeds,” he added.
