Serena Williams wins sixth Miami title, beats Sharapova

World number one Serena Williams won a record-setting sixth Sony Open Tennis – Miami title on Saturday after beating number two Maria Sharapova in a three-set thriller 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Williams was down a break in the second set before she found her rhythm to win the next ten games and seal the prestigious title.

“Maria definitely pushed me – she did a really great job today,” Williams said. “Like she said, I look forward to our next matches – it’s going to be really fun for the fans and for us and for everyone.”

This is Williams’ 48th WTA title. She won the Miami title in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2013. She also finished runner up in this event twice.

Despite the loss, Sharapova said that she had a great month.

“It’s obviously been a really nice month,” Sharapova said during the awarding of the trophies. “It’s disappointing to end it like this but Serena played a great match, and I’m sure we’ll play a few more times this year.”

Sharapova is now a five-time runner-up in this event. She’s been attempting to win an Indian Wells – Miami Open sweep, a feat that was rarely done. The last one to achieve this was now-retired Kim Clijsters.
