Current world number one Serena Williams enters the event as defending champion which means that she needs to win the title once more to secure the top ranking after the event. Meanwhile, Maria Sharapova could clinch the top ranking should she perform better than Williams this week. In 2012, Williams defeated Sharapova in the quarterfinals enroute to the title victory.
