The world number one ranking is on the line at the WTA Mutua Madid Open 2013 which begins on May 4, 2013. Current world number one Serena Williams enters the event as defending champion which means that she needs to win the title once more to secure the top ranking after the event. Meanwhile, Maria Sharapova could clinch the top ranking should she perform better than Williams this week. In 2012, Williams defeated Sharapova in the quarterfinals enroute to the title victory.
The Mutua Madrid Open 2013 is a highly anticipated event with the world’s top ten expected to participate in this WTA Premier Mandatory event. Only two players have a chance to end the tournament as number one – Williams and Sharapova.
