Roger Federer happy to see fellow 30-something pros still playing well on tour

World number two Roger Federer admitted that it would feel “a bit awkward” if he’s the only professional player still competing at the ATP Tour who’s thirty years and over. He said that it is nice that fellow 30-and-over players are doing well in the tour.

“[It’s] nice to have that generation of players next to you,” said Federer. “Because if I [were] the only guy over 30, it would feel a bit awkward, to be honest. But I’m not… it’s definitely inspiring seeing all the other players, many guys over 30 years old, still playing on Tour and playing well.”

The defending Madrid Masters champion defeated 34-year old Radek Stepanek in the first round on Tuesday. He will next face a much younger player – Kei Nishikori of Japan in the third round on Thursday.

Other players that stood out in his batch include Tommy Haas, David Ferrer and Tommy Robredo.

“I made the breakthrough early, but for years I’ve always looked at the long term,” Federer said. “I think that helps me to play for a long period of time, hopefully. It was always my goal to play until 35 or more. For that reason, I still feel I have many more years to go.”

The Swiss star is aiming to claim his 77th singles title by defending the Madrid Masters which would tie him with John McEnroe in third for the most number of singles title haul in the Open Era.

“I would love to tie McEnroe at 77, no doubt about it,” he said.
