Top stars look forward to WTA Championships in Singapore

Some of the world’s top female stars react positively on the announcement of Singapore being the official host of the WTA Championships from 2014 to 2018.

“It’s incredibly exciting to have our WTA Championships heading to Singapore, which is a fantastic sporting city,” Maria Sharapova said. “Women’s tennis is truly international, and bringing our very best event to fantastic new markets like Singapore is great way to continue to grow the sport. I can’t wait to help introduce the fans of Singapore to the year-end WTA Championships.”

“Singapore is a wonderful city and I am really looking forward to playing our season finale in this exciting new market for women’s tennis,” Serena Williams said. “I’ve been fortunate to qualify for WTA Championships in five different cities during my career, and I know that our new partners in Singapore and the fans of Singapore will help make take our WTA Championships to new heights.”

The WTA Tour officials announced that the Southeast Asian nation of Singapore will host the prestigious WTA Championships from 2014 to 2018. This record-setting five-year agreement has a lot of firsts. For the first, aside from the world’s top eight singles players in attendance, the world’s top eight doubles teams will be competing at this event. In the past, there were only four doubles teams participating in the event.

A record total prize money worth $6.5 million is up for grabs and the winners will certainly get the lion’s share of this.

The Singapore Sports Hub, a state-of-the-art $1.3 billion structure, will be hosting the WTA Championships and the Singapore Indoor Stadium will feature a 7,500 seater venue for tennis enthusiasts everywhere.

The WTA Championships 2013 will be staged for the third and final time in Istanbul, Turkey.
