Wawrinka squeaks past 2012 finalist Tomas Berdych at Madrid Masters

Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka assured himself a return to the world’s top ten next week by virtue of reaching the Madrid Masters final on Saturday. The Swiss was a break down in the final set but regrouped just in time to beat last year’s finalist Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Up next for Wawrinka is world number five Rafael Nadal for the title.

Nadal is going to be a heavy favorite to win the title considering his record-setting wins on claycourts but Wawrinka has just won the Portugal Open last weekend. The latter will have to find a way to finally notch a win against Nadal. Nadal leads 8-0 in their head to head record, three of those wins coming on clay.

This will be Wawrinka’s second trip to an ATP Masters 1000 final, after having reached this far in 2008 at the Rome Masters.
