The 2013 Wimbledon Championships is the third Grand Slam event of the season that’s being contested on the lush grasscourts of the All England Club from June 24 to July 7. It is regarded as the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world and the best male and female tennis players from all over the world are expected to participate and battle it out for the lion’s share of the prize money and significant ranking points.
Swiss superstar Roger Federer earned his seventh Wimbledon title in 2012 after beating hometown bet Andy Murray in a four-set final. This increased Federer’s Grand Slam singles haul to 17 and the victory has vaulted him back at the top of the world rankings, finally surpassing the long-standing record of Pete Sampras with the most weeks as number one. On the Ladies’ side, Serena Williams rebounded from a shock first round loss at the French Open to winning her 15th Grand Slam singles title. The American defeated Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska in a three set marathon match.
All eyes will now be on Rafael Nadal, who was bounced by then 100th-ranked Lukas Rosol in the second round last year. The Spaniard is currently on a hot streak this season, reaching nine finals out of nine tournaments attended since February – winning seven of them including his eighth career French Open title earlier this month.
