240th-ranked Mahut wins first career ATP title at ‘s-Hertogenbosch

Frenchman Nicolas Mahut, currently ranked 240th, became the lowest-ranked titlist on the ATP Tour on Saturday after beating second-seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland 6-3, 6-4 in the Topshelf Open final in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands.

The 31-year old won his first career ATP World Tour singles titles. He’s been runner-up twice before, in 2007 at the Aegon Championships and also at the same year at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport.

“It’s amazing. I cannot believe I won today,” Mahut said.

“I didn’t know if I was going to play again when I had some bad times with my knee. All my team helped me a lot. We worked hard and here I am with the trophy. It’s a good story,” he added.

Mahut’s ranking slipped since he was out of the tour for six months due to knee injury.

With the win, Mahut earned 250 ranking points which will see his ranking rise to 127th on Monday. The Frenchman continues his journey on tour as he ventures to the Wimbledon 2013 Championships where he will begin his campaign against Jan Hajek of the Czech Republic on Monday.
