David Ferrer reaches Roland Garros semifinal for second straight year

World number four David Ferrer reached his sixth Grand Slam semifinal with a quarterfinal victory over fellow Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 at the Roland Garros 2013 tournament. This is the second straight year that Ferrer has reached this far in the tournament. Ferrer will be attempting to break the barrier this time and finally reach a Grand Slam final for the first time. Ferrer has lost his five previous Grand Slam semifinal appearances.

“I do realise it’s not the first round of a smaller tournament. It’s a semi-final. But I’m not going to start dreaming and celebrate before it’s time. It’s one match. That’s it.”

Up next for Ferrer is hometown bet Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the latter having outlasted 2009 Roger Federer in straight sets as well. As for Ferrer, he is expecting the crowd to be supporting his semifinal opponent.

“I think it’s quite normal [that] the crowd is going to be supporting Jo,” said Ferrer. “He’s French and I am very happy he’s made it that far. I’ll do everything I can to make it to the final. I have to remain focused.”

Ferrer leads the head to head series record against Tsonga with 2-1.
