Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro just dropped eight games in his first round victory at the Wimbledon 2013 Championships. The world number eight overpowered Albert Ramos of Spain 6-2, 7-5, 6-1. The 24-year old, winner of the US Open 2009 tournament, is aiming to make it past the fourth round at the All England Club for the first time in 6 visits.
“I feel okay [as it was] my first round against a lefty player. I think I played okay,” said del Potro.
“I made many, many efforts in the end of the second set, and he took the chance to survive. But in the end I broke his serve again. In the third [set] I played much better, trying to do my game, be aggressive all the time. I think it was a good match for the first round,” he added.
Del Potro missed more than a month of competitive tennis due to a respiratory virus. This forced him to miss prestigious claycourt events such as the Mutua Madrid Masters and Roland Garros. He returned with a quarterfinal finish at the Aegon Championships two weeks ago.
Up next for the Argentine is Jesse Levine of Canada.
