Feliciano Lopez earns Eastbourne title after beating Simon

Gusty winds were swirling on the tennis courts which made it difficult for the finalists of the Aegon International in Easbourne to play their game. In the end, the one who withstood these challenges emerged as the winner and it was Spain’s Feliciano Lopez.

The Spaniard defeated Frenchman Gilles Simon 7-6, 6-7, 6-0 in the final. This is Lopez’s first career grasscourt title.

Coincidentally, the pair will once again meet in the first round of the Wimbledon 2013 Championships which begins on Monday, June 24. Lopez is a three-time former quarterfinalist at this grasscourt Slam event.

“I think grass is my best surface, and to have at least one title on grass is very nice feeling,” said Loppez.

“This match was really special, because it’s great to be in the finals and it’s an opportunity to win another ATP event. But playing the same guy in two days, it’s also important to have some feedback, even though we know each other very well, because almost every week we see each other,” he added.

Lopez entered the event unseeded but emerged victorious after a week of impressive. This is his third career title at the ATP Tour. Meanwhile, Simon, a former top ten player is seeking his 11th ATP World Tour title but is now 10-4 in finals record.
