Fourth-ranked David Ferrer advances to Wimbledon second round

French Open 2013 finalist David Ferrer advanced to the second round of the 2013 Wimbledon Championships on Tuesday after battling past 101st-ranked Martin Alund 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. The Spaniard improved to a 38-11 win-loss record this season. Up next is his compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut.

“It is difficult to play on grass for my game,” said Ferrer.

“It is very difficult to defend. Today, the key was the third set. In the important moments, he was a little bit nervous. I am happy, because I am in second round, but I know that I have to improve my game.”

Ferrer reached his first career Grand Slam final earlier this month at Roland Garros but lost to compatriot Rafael Nadal. Due to his strong performance during the grass season last year, Ferrer clinched the number four seeding at the All England Club. There were a lot of talks during the past few weeks that he might be seeded lower than his current ranking to make way for two-time champion Rafael Nadal to take the number four seeding but the All England Club officials opted to stick the with current ATP World Tour Rankings.
