Frenchman Gael Monfils to skip Wimbledon 2013

Gael Monfils of France has reached the quarterfinals of the ongoing Gerry Weber Open on Wednesday but he grabbed the attention of the media when he announced that he won’t be participating at the Wimbledon Championships 2013 which will take place this month.

Monfils defeated qualifier Jan Hernych 6-2, 6-3 to progress to the final eight at the grasscourt event in Halle, Germany. He revealed afterwards that he already withdrew his request for a wildcard at Wimbledon, stating that he had to deal with a “personal problem” but he did not provide additional information.

The Frenchman was ranked as high as number seven in the world but after nursing a knee injury for several months last year, his ranking plummeted outside of the world’s top 100. He managed to regain points and is now ranked 67th after a runner up finish in Nice and reaching the French Open third round last month.
