Maria Sharapova knocked out of Wimbledon second round

A 131st-ranked qualifier has eliminated heavy favorite Maria Sharapova at the Wimbledon Championships second round.

Portugal’s Michelle Larcher de Brito has knocked out third-seed Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-4 on a day where several players have pulled out of the tournament due to injuries.

It is one of the headline-grabbing events of the tournament so far, with top names in the men’s side such as Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer getting eliminated early in the tournament.

“I think it was a combination of things. I give her a lot of credit: she played really well today. I don’t think I was aggressive enough…It’s frustrating. This tournament is extremely special and it’s tough to lose but I’m going to keep my head high about it.”

The ladies’ draw has been blown wide open with several marquee players already eliminated or have pulled out of the event. The tournament already lost number two Victoria Azarenka, number five Sara Errani and number nine Caroline Wozniacki.
