Roger Federer could be out of world’s top 4 after Wimbledon 2013 Championships

It took six months this 2013 season before Roger Federer clinched his first title of the year (at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle). This in turn affected his place in the world’s rankings.

The Swiss tennis superstar is in danger of losing his place in the world’s top four after the Wimbledon Championships, which begins on Monday. Federer is entering the event as the defending champion which means he has to perform well at this grasscourt Slam event since he has 2,000 ranking points to defend. Failure to do so means that Federer will be going down the rankings to at least fifth, something that he hasn’t been in since 2003.

Based on the following list below, it can be seen that Federer is in fifth place entering the Wimbledon tournament with the 2012 ranking points from this event taken off:

Number in parenthesis (ranking as of June 17, 2013), number without parenthesis (2012 Wimbledon ranking points taken off)

1 Djokovic, Novak (SRB) (11,830) 11110
2 Murray, Andy (GBR) (8,560) 7360
3 Nadal, Rafael (ESP) (6,895) 6840
4 Ferrer, David (ESP) (7,220) 6610
5 Federer, Roger (SUI) (7,740) 5740
6 Berdych, Tomas (CZE) (4,515) 4505
7 Del Potro, Juan Martin (ARG) (3,960) 3780
8 Tsonga, Jo-Wilfried (FRA) (4,155) 3435

An achievement less than successfully defending the Wimbledon title could cost Federer his place in the world’s top four. Rafael Nadal, currently ranked fifth, has only lesser points to defend due to his shock second round ouster in last year’s Wimbledon. Ferrer reached the quarterfinals last year and could potentially improve on that finish due to a favorable draw which could potentially lead him to his first Wimbledon semifinal. We’ll have to wait and see how things go at the All England Club.
