Roger Federer says he knew Murray would win a Grand Slam

World number three Roger Federer said that he already knew from the get go that British number one Andy Murray would someday win a Grand Slam singles title of his own and this was made a reality when Murray won the US Open in 2012.

Last year has been a great one for Murray, having reached the 2012 Wimbledon final for the first time but lost to Federer. The Briton then reversed the fortunes less than a month later by beating Federer in the Olympic gold medal match at the All England Club then went on to win the US Open two months later, beating top-ranked Novak Djokovic.

“I thought Andy was going to win a big one anyway at some point,” Federer said.

“He’s too good to always keep losing semis and finals. He’s put himself too often in that position time and time again. His game’s very good for all surfaces now. He’s physically superb. He plays well. He’s got crowd support here. He loves the U.S. Open, Australia. He’s grown up on clay, as well. Everything seems very natural for him. He doesn’t only give himself one or two chances throughout the year to win Grand Slams, but multiple ones. Always figured he was going to win one. Somehow I thought it was going to be Wimbledon before the finals last year. I thought this was going to be it for him. I was able to fight that off and play a good match and not believe that it was his time now… Now he’s [a] favorite every tournament he goes into around the world,” the Swiss star added.
