Romanian Simona Halep makes ultimate transition from clay to grass with Topshelf Open title win

Simona Halep of Romania went on a ten-match winning streak and won two titles on different surfaces – in Nurnberg claycourt event last weekend and on this weekend’s Topshelf Open, a grasscourt event in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

Halep’s run has been impressive. This week, she defeated top seed Roberta Vinci and third-seed Carla Suarez Navarro. She went on to beat fourth-seed Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium in the final. This is an ultimate preparation for the young WTA star for the Wimbledon Championships which begins on Monday.

“It’s incredible, because I played really well on grass after a week on clay,” Halep said. “Today I played well. I was a little bit nervous at the start but I just tried to fight for every point. She’s playing a very difficult game for me, slicing a lot, but I played every point and just kept going, and I won in the end.

“I’m really happy. I want to enjoy this evening. It’s a special moment for me,” she added.

Halep won’t have much time to relish the victory since she’ll be heading immediately for Wimbledon. However, she added that she’ll definitely be celebrating after Wimbledon.
