Serena Williams guns for sixth Wimbledon singles title

Top-ranked Serena Williams will be entering the Wimbledon Championships 2013, which begins on Monday, as the number one seed and the defending champion. It’s no secret that she’s the heavy favorite to win her sixth Wimbledon singles title which she will certainly be gunning for. Is there someone who can stop her from achieving this feat?

Tennis analysts and experts agree in saying that it is safe to say that the winner of the Venus Rosewater Dish by the end of the Wimbledon 2013 Championships is bound to be a member of the world’s top three – Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova.

It does make sense. After all these three have won the last six Grand Slam singles titles combined and three had been runner up in three of the six Grand Slam events.

Serena Williams has gone 74-3 since her shocking first round loss at the French Open last year but she went on to win the next two Grand Slam events of the 2012 season – the Wimbledon and US Open, plus the singles and doubles gold medals at the London Olympics and the year-end WTA Championships. She reversed her fortunes at Roland Garros, winning her second career French Open title earlier this month.

Should Williams win the Wimbledon for the sixth time, then she will clinch her 17th Grand Slam title, just one Slam away from tying tennis greats such as Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova who achieved 18 Grand Slam singles titles each.
