Venus Williams withdraws from Wimbledon 2013 Championships

Five-time Wimbledon singles titlist Venus Williams has posted on her official Facebook page that she won’t be participating in this year’s grasscourt Grand Slam event which begins next week due to an ongoing back injury that forces her not to compete in the next couple of months.

“Unfortunately, I will not be able to participate in Wimbledon this year,” the American, who just celebrated her 33rd birthday on Monday, wrote on the social networking site.

“I am extremely disappointed as I have always loved The Championships, but I need to take time to let my back heal.”

Williams is one of the most successful tennis players at the All England Club, winning the singles titles five times in 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007 and 2008. A year ago, she made a shock first round exit.

“I look forward to returning to the courts as soon as possible,” Williams wrote.

“Many thanks to my fans for the love and support and I will be seeing you very soon back on the courts,” she added.

Aside from winning five singles titles, Williams also won four doubles titles together with her sister Serena. They are the defending doubles titlist for this year’s Wimbledon.
