Wimbledon 2013: Serena Williams wins 33rd straight match

World number one Serena Williams is not about to follow most of the top five players making an early exit at the Wimbledon Championships.

The American sort of restored some order at the All England Club on Thursday after she won her second round match against France’s Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-2.

“I still feel like I’m trying to adjust a lot,” Williams said after the match. “I feel like today I played a little better than my first round match. I feel like I had to play better. But I’m still adjusting.”

Williams has played against Garcia recently, at the second round of the Roland Garros and we already know who won that match.

“It’s always difficult to play Serena, but I played much better today than I did at the French Open, because I knew her a little bit better,” Garcia said afterwards. “It was nice to play her on Court 1 here. It’s a very nice court. The fans there really like their tennis, so it was a good experience,” Garcia said.

Williams now has won her 33rd straight match, a feat that is second-longest since her older sister Venus Williams achieved 35 match wins in a row in 2000.

Up next for the American is Japanese veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm who outlasted Romania’s Alexandra Cadantu.

“I have so much respect for her,” Williams said. “I think she’s so inspiring to be playing such high level tennis at her age. And she’s a real danger on grass courts – I know that – I will have to be ready.”
