Wimbledon 2013: Steve Darcis knew “nobody was expecting me to win” against Nadal

Steve Darcis, currently ranked 135th in the world, knew that no one expected him to win his first round match at the Wimbledon 2013 Championships. After all, he will be facing two-time champion Rafael Nadal, who was just fresh from winning his eighth French Open title.

“Nobody was expecting me to win,” Darcis said.

But he did and made the biggest headline at the All England Club so far, ousting the world number five 7-6, 7-6, 6-4. This is the first time for Nadal to lose in the opening round of a Grand Slam event. As for Darcis, this is his first time to beat a player in the world’s top five.

“I knew that it would be very, very difficult. But it was a great match from the start to the end. [Nadal is] just the second guy in the Top 10 that I have beaten. It’s one of my greatest wins. So I’m really, really happy today,” the Belgian said.
