2012 Wimbledon runner-up Radwanska barges in fourth round

Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska survived a spirit challenge from American teen Madison Keys just in time to earn her place in the fourth round at the All England Club.

Radwanska has had major success at this grasscourt Slam event, having won the girls’ title in the past and even reached the ladies’ singles final last year, losing to Serena Williams in three sets. The Pole is still in the running to make it far in this event.

As for her third round match, Radwanska ended up with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

“She was playing great tennis,” Radwanska said. “In the second set two easy mistakes cost me one set. So in the third set I had to really focus on my serve and take my chance when I got it. She didn’t put so many first serves in during that game, and there was my chance, and that’s why I won the set.

“She was serving unbelievable. When I had break points, a couple of times I couldn’t do anything.”

Poland is well-represented at the second week of Wimbledon. Aside from Radwanska in the women’s side, the men’s event has both Lukasz Kubot and Jerzy Janowicz in the fourth round.

“I’m just very happy to see much more Polish names in the draw,” Radwanska commented. “Of course, Jerzy and Lukasz are playing really great tennis. I’m happy for them, because they’re working really hard and they deserve it. Polish tennis is getting a bit bigger, and I’m really happy about that.”

Radwanska will next face Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova. The latter has defeated Croatian Petra Martic 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Pironkova is a former semifinalist at the All England Club and could produce another upset if the Pole is not at her element.
