Andy Murray advances to Wimbledon quarterfinals, will face Verdasco

World number two Andy Murray of Great Britain advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the sixth consecutive year on Monday after he defeated 20th-seed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 6-4, 7-6, 6-1 on Centre Court. This extends Murray’s winning streak on grass to 15 matches.

“I felt good so far. I played some good matches. Today, was a tough one,” said Murray. “It was the toughest test for me, and I came through it well. It will be a different challenge on Wednesday. I’ll get myself ready for that and hopefully play well.

Murray attained his best finish at Wimbledon last year when he reached the final but lost to eventual champion Roger Federer. With Federer eliminated early on this tournament, Murray’s being tapped as a heavy favorite to win the title for his home country for the first time since 1930s.

The British tennis star is aware of his next opponent and will have to continue bringing his A game in the upcoming match against Fernando Verdasco of Spain.

“Verdasco is a very, very good tennis player. He’s extremely dangerous when he’s on his game. I haven’t played a left?hander the whole year, which I think is pretty amazing six months into the year. So I’ll try and get a lefty in to serve at me tomorrow,” he said.
