Groundbreaking ceremony for Wuhan Tennis Open site takes place

The construction of the Guanggu International Tennis Center, the site of the Premier-level Wuhan Tennis Open, officially begins following the groundbreaking ceremony that took place on Wednesday.

Wuhan, China is the hometown of current world number five and 2011 Roland Garros champion Li Na.

The Wuhan Tennis Open will make its debut in 2014 and will feature at least seven of the world’s top ten tennis players and the event has a total financial commitment of more than $2.3 million in prize money. This event is expected to attract massive media mileage and billions of viewers via more than 100 networks from around the world that will be covering this event.

The Guanggu International Tennis Center will have a 15,000-seat stadium, a secondary stadium that can seat 5,000 and six outdoor courts. It is expected that the secondary stadium will be finished first and will be the site of the 2014 edition of the tennis event. Once the 15,000-seat stadium is finished, it will become the main site of the Wuhan Open starting in 2015.
