New York City Council approves expansion of US Open site

The Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the site of the US Open Tennis Championships, will be having a $500 million expansion, thanks to the approval made by the New York City Council on Wednesday.

The council voted 47-1 in favor of the expansion of the site based in Queens. This was made possible after the officials negotiated with the US Tennis Association in coming up with projects that will benefit the community.

“This deal was a long time coming, and I can say with confidence that we will benefit from this expansion,”
City Council member Julissa Ferreras said.

The expansion project includes updating of the infrastructure and facilities that are already out of date.

“We are confident that in partnership with the local Queens communities and elected officials, we will ensure a better Flushing Meadows Corona Park and National Tennis Center,” USTA Executive Director Gordon Smith said in a statement.
