Roberta Vinci beats good friend Errani to clinch Palermo title

Italy’s Roberta Vinci has defeated defending champion and good friend Sara Errani in the final of the XXVI Italiacom Open 2013 in Palermo last weekend. It was an entertaining final between two Italians and the top seeds of the tournament too.

It seemed like higher-ranked Errani was the favorite to win the event considering that she’s won the tournament twice (2008 and 2012) and she has won their previous five meetings. However, Vinci’s aggressive game paid off and won 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

“I played so well today,” Vinci said. “I played very well in the first set, but Sara started to play much better in the second set. Starting the third set I was 4-0 up and had a lot of chances for 5-0 but lost the game and started to get a little bit nervous, but at the end I won, so I’m really happy right now.

“I played an unbelievable match today. I knew I had to – Sara is an unbelievable player.”

This is Vinci’s second title of this season and is on the verge of joining Errani in the world’s top ten. With her strong form of late, she may just achieve this feat later this season.
