Sharapova withdraws from Stanford tourney due to hip injury

World number two Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the Bank of the West Classic 2013 tournament which takes place in Stanford, California from July 22 to 28 due to a left hip injury.

According to reports, Sharapova injured her hip during her shock second round loss to Portugal’s Michelle Larcher de Brito at the Wimbledon Championships late last month. The Russian tennis star is slated to make a return at the Rogers Cup 2013 tournament in Toronto.

The Bank of the West Classic 2013 defending champion is Serena Williams. However, the top-ranked player may not be able to defend the title by then since she’s participating this week at Collector Swedish Open, an International-level WTA event.
