Simona Haleps wins third WTA title of 2013 at Budapest

Romania’s Simona Halep is now just a few places away from becoming a Top 20 player by winning her third title of the 2013 WTA season at the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest.

The young tennis star squandered three match points in the second set but managed to make a strong finish in the third in beating Yvonne Meusburger 6-3, 6-7, 6-1.

“It was an amazing match,” Halep said. “Yvonne played really well. I had match points in the second set and she came back, and it was very difficult to win after that but I did and I’m very happy.”

Halep has compiled a 16-1 win-loss record since the French Open, winning back to back titles at Nürnberg and ‘s-Hertogenbosch. After a second round exit at Wimbledon, Halep rebounded with this title-winning run at Budapest.

“It’s a fantastic feeling to win my third WTA title of the year,” Halep added. “I just believed in my chances and I’ve taken them. I’m really enjoying my game right now. I hope that I can keep winning.”
