Teen Elina Svitolina wins first career WTA title in Baku, Azerbaijan

Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina won her first career WTA title at the Baku Cup on Sunday, beating Israel’s Shahar Peer in the final of this WTA International event 6-4, 6-4.

It was an impressive run for both Svitolina and Peer to the final. Both players have eliminated seeded players to make it to the final two. In the end, there can only be one victor and it was Svitolina who emerged victorious.

“Thank you Shahar for a great final,” Svitolina said during the awarding of the trophy. “It was a very tough match today and I had a lot of tough matches throughout the week, but I worked really hard coming into the tournament, and it turned out well for me. Thanks to everyone and I’ll see you all next year.”

The doubles event was won by number two seeds Irina Buryachok and Oksana Kalashnikova after the duo defeated Eleni Daniilidou and Aleksandra Krunic in the final, 46 76(3) 104.
