Andy Murray prefers more grand Slams than top ranking

World number two Andy Murray highlighted his preference to win more Grand Slam singles titles even it means not getting the number one ranking.

“Every player would like to get to number one but I would rather win another a grand slam or two and not get to number one,” Murray said in an interview earlier this week prior to the start of the Montreal Masters 2013 tournament.

The 26-year old won his second Grand Slam singles title last month after winning the Wimbledon title, beating top-ranked Novak Djokovic. Murray ended the 77-year wait for a British male champion at the All England Club. He will be entering the next Grand Slam event, the US Open 2013 tournament, as a defending champion. He won his first Grand Slam title in New York with a thrilling five-set victory over Djokovic.

“It took me a long time to win my first one [grand slam] and I know how difficult it is to win those tournaments,” Murray said. “I’ll work as hard as I can to give myself an opportunity at the U.S Open and see how I do there.”

Murray is a two-time champion at the Rogers Cup – having the event in 2009 and 2010.

“I’ve always looked ahead to the slams and sometimes not played my best tennis in the Masters series, which wasn’t the case at the beginning of my career,” he said. “I want to try and do well here.”
