Kei Nishikori may be ranked in world’s top ten before US Open 2013

Asia’s number one male tennis player Kei Nishikori may soon become part of the world’s top ten and this could happen before the US Open 2013 Championships, provided that he posts better results in two ATP 1000 Masters events starting with the Montreal Masters this week where he’s seeded ninth.

“These two Masters [1000s are] really important for us, especially for me,” the world number 11 said. “I like hard court. I didn’t get much points last year, so hopefully I can do well here.”

Nishikori only accumulated a total of 100 ranking points from the Rogers Cup and Cincinnati Masters. He lost in the second round in Canada (10 points) and made it in the third round at Cincinnati (90 points). If he posts better results this year then he could potentially overtake 10th-ranked Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland prior to the US Open.

Wawrinka has a healthy 510-point lead over Nishikori but needs to defend his semifinal points at the Cincinnati Masters.
