Maria Sugarpova at the US Open 2013 Championships?

Reports surfaced that Russian tennis superstar Maria Sharapova is considering to change her name to Maria Sugarpova in time for the US Open 2013 Championships which begins on August 26.

Apparently the move was in a bid to promote her candy company in time for the last Grand Slam event of the season but the team decided not to push through after all.

“Maria has pushed her team to do fun, out-of-the-box-type things to get the word out about Sugarpova,” Eisenbud said in an interview with ESPN. “In Miami, we’re going to fill a glass truck full of candy and drive it around town. This was an idea that fell along those lines. But, at the end of the day, we would have to change all her identification, she has to travel to Japan and China right after the tournament and it was going to be very difficult.”

Sharapova, a green card holder in the United States, will have to go through the hassle of filing a name change petition in the state of Florida (where she resides), submit fingerprints, subject herself to a background check and attend hearings before a judge. The name change will become official once the judge signs an order legalizing it.

Sharapova’s company, Sugarpova, has become a hit in the market where a premium line of candies are being sold in reasonable rates. The company sold about 1.8 million bags of candies in major markets worldwide. It’s been announced that the company will expand its product line to include purses, pendants, bags and other accessories.
