Roger Federer drops to world number 7 after Cincinnati Masters quarterfinal loss

Swiss tennis superstar Roger Federer will be seeded seventh at the US Open Championships which begins on August 26, reflecting the ranking that he will have starting on Monday, August 18.

Federer failed to defend the Cincinnati Masters title this week after falling in the quarterfinals to Rafael Nadal. While his ranking is slipping, Nadal’s will likely climb another notch.

Nadal is ranked number three this week following his victory at Montreal Masters and winning the Cincinnati Masters will place him to number two in the world, overtaking Wimbledon champion Andy Murray in the process.

Federer had a chance to retain his number five ranking by defending the Masters 1000 title. By next week, Tomas Berdych will rise to number five and Juan Martin Del Potro will snag the number six ranking. Both Berdych and Del Potro have reached the Cincinnati Masters semifinals as of this writing and could meet in the final if they win their respective matches today.

Federer’s number 7 ranking is his lowest since 2002.
