Roger Federer ties Wayne Ferreira’s record of consecutive Grand Slam appearances at 56

Swiss superstar Roger Federer is on course to becoming the only player in ATP history to have the most number of consecutive Grand Slam appearances. But we’ll have to wait until the Australian Open 2014 for that to him. For now, he will be sharing the spotlight with one of the tennis greats.

Federer tied the record set by Wayne Ferreira of South Africa in playing in his 56th consecutive Grand Slam event at the US Open.

Ferreira appeared in 56 consecutive Grand Slams from the 1991 Australian Open until the 2004 US Open. The South African reached a career high number 6 in the world back in 1995 with his best Grand Slam finishes coming from the Australian Open where he reached the semifinals twice (in 1992 and 2003). He’s also a silver medalist at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in men’s doubles event.

Ferreira also won a silver medal in doubles with Pietie Norval at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
