Roger Federer’s ranking may drop as low as world number 7 before US Open 2013

The world ranking of Roger Federer is in further peril after he decided to skip the Montreal Masters 2013 tournament. In fact, he could be seeded seventh at the US Open 2013 Championships which begins on August 26 if he performs poorly at the Cincinnati Masters.

The fifth-ranked Swiss superstar currently has 5,515 ranking points and he will be entering the Cincinnati Masters next week as the defending champion. Which means, he won’t be gaining more points should he manage to win the title but he will lose points if he falls short of winning the title.

Meanwhile, sixth-ranked Tomas Berdych and seventh-ranked Juan Martin Del Potro have 4,865 and 4,660 ranking points respectively. However, these two have greater chances of overtaking Federer if they post better results from last year. At the Rogers Cup in 2012, Berdych lost in the third round while Del Potro lost in the second. At the Cincinnati Masters last year, Del Potro reached the semifinals while Berdych lost in the third round.
