Slovakia’s Rybarikova successfully defends Citi Open title in Washington

Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia remains undefeated at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C. after she secured the title for the second straight year on Sunday, beating Germany’s Andrea Petkovic 6-4, 7-6.

“I played great today – I couldn’t be happier,” Rybarikova said after the match. “Today there were some really good parts of the match for me. Andrea was playing too well at the beginning so I’m happy I managed to win the first set – and then again at the end she started playing very well again, and I was getting a little tight and my arm was kind of shaking, so I’m really happy I could play a great tie-break there.”

The Slovakian was wary about the draw this year after seeing that she will be playing against a much tougher field.

“This year when I saw the draw I thought, ‘Yeah, this is going to be very tough,'” she said. “I would have been happy to make the quarterfinals and play Kerber. But every match I was playing better and better, then I beat Kerber, which was a huge win for me. That gave me a lot of confidence.

“Now that it’s over, I can really say I feel so good here. I love playing on this stadium, the crowd is great, everything’s perfect – I really can’t think of one bad thing to say about this tournament!”

As for Petkovic, the loss still left her feeling satisfied, considering that she just came back from a number of injuries last year and the first few months of this season. She reached her second final of the season so far – having made it the finals in Nürnberg last June.

“It was a pretty good week – all in all I’m quite satisfied,” Petkovic said. “I would have loved to win the title here to really feel like I’ve completely come back, but I’m really okay. She played really well.
