Maria Sharapova of Russia, currently ranked number two, has opted to pull out of the event due to ongoing rehabilitation of her hip which was injured at the Wimbledon Championships in June. Defending champion Petra Kvitova will return and attempt to hoist the trophy for the second consecutive year.
