Venus Williams bows out of US Open 2013 in tight three setter against Jie Zheng

Venus Williams had all the chances to make it to the third round of the US Open on Wednesday, but it just wasn’t meant to be.

The former top-ranked player made another early exit at the US Open 2013 Championships with a second round loss to China’s Jie Zheng 3-6, 6-2, 6-7. This is the third straight year in New York that Williams was out after the second round.

Despite the loss, Williams brushed off speculations that she will be retiring from the sport soon.

“If I didn’t think I had anything in the tank, I wouldn’t be here,” said Williams, a two-time US Open champion.

“I’ve had a tough set of circumstances to work through, too, especially this year, last year, and the year before. I’ve been dealt some cards that aren’t as easy to deal with, but I have to play with them. The last few months haven’t been easy, coming back from the back injury,” Williams said.

“I feel like it’s definitely affected my game, but I’m working on it,” she added. “I’m a fighter.”
