Victoria Azarenka becomes second to qualify for WTA Championships 2013 Istanbul

World number 2 Victoria Azarenka became the second player to qualify for the year-end TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships that will take place in Istanbul, Turkey. The Sinan Erdem Dome will serve as host for the final time from October 22 to 27, 2013. The WTA Championships will move to Singapore beginning 2014.

The world’s top eight singles players and top four doubles teams will compete at the year-end event and battle for the lion’s share of the record-setting $6 million in prize money.

“I’m super excited to have qualified for the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships,” Azarenka said. “Making the Championships is one of my goals every year and it really shows your consistency through the season. We have so much fun in Istanbul; it’s one of the best events and a beautiful facility. I’m looking forward to seeing all the fans, the excitement and energy they bring is just amazing.”

Azarenka has had a remarkable run so far this season. The Belarussian successfully defended the Australian Open title in January and won other two hardcourt events in Doha and Cincinnati. The latter two events were significant victories for the Belarussian as they are wins against top-ranked Serena Williams.

“Congratulations to Victoria on a great season thus far,” WTA Chairman & CEO Stacey Allaster said. “Successfully defending a Grand Slam title is an incredible achievement, and her thrilling title runs, most recently at the Western & Southern Open, have showcased her fighting spirit and determination to win. It will be terrific to have her back at this year’s TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships.”
