Victoria Azarenka pulls out of Rogers Cup – Toronto due to back injury

World number two Victoria Azarenka had no choice but to pull out of this week’s Rogers Cup in Toronto, Canada due to a lower back injury. The Premier WTA event begins on Monday, August 5 at the Rexall Centre.

Azarenka, who just regained the number two ranking following her runner-up finish at Carlsbad tournament on Sunday, made a last minute decision to withdraw from the Canadian event after she met with doctors shortly after the final.

“I’m so disappointed that I can’t make it to Toronto as I added it to my schedule knowing what an important event it is,” Azarenka said. “I am sorry to all my Canadian fans and I will work hard to get healthy and back on the courts as soon as possible.”

Azarenka was supposed to have been seeded second at the Rogers Cup after Maria Sharapova announced earlier that she won’t be participating in the event. With the Belarussian out of the event, Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki snags the number eight seeding and gets a first-round bye just like the other higher seeds.
