Ana Ivanovic, Tsvetana Pironkova secure Tournament of Champions 2013 wildcards

The Tournament of Champions – Sofia, a WTA year-end tournament that begins after the conclusion of the WTA Championships, has awarded two wildcards this week to two-time winner Ana Ivanovic of Serbia and Bulgaria’s number one player Tsvetana Pironkova.

“Our choice was difficult because there were many candidates for the tournament’s invitation,” said Tournament Director Stefan Tsvetkov. “We believe Ana deserved her wildcard because besides being a former World No.1 player, she is also a two-time winner of this tournament.”

Ivanovic won this title twice when it was still being held in Bali, Indonesia.

“I’m really looking forward to going to Sofia,” Ivanovic said. “I’ve done very well in the Tournament Of Champions and my goal is to win it for a third time. I’ve been to Bulgaria once before, but I didn’t have the chance to explore, so on this trip I’ll definitely take some time to enjoy the city.”

Ivanovic is a former top-ranked player who won the 2008 French Open. She has a total of 11 WTA titles, including the aforementioned two in Bali in 2010 and 2011.

Pironkova has reached seven WTA semifinals in her career, including a Grand Slam semifinal in Wimbledon three years ago. She reached the semifinals of the Tournament of Champions a year ago.
