Andy Murray clinches ATP World Tour Finals 2013 berth, becomes third to qualify

World number three Andy Murray of Great Britain became the third player to qualify for the prestigious Barclays ATP World Tour Finals 2013. The ATP World Tour Finals 2013 will take palce at The O2 in London from November 4 to 11. By reaching the US Open quarterfinals, Murray had accumulated enough ranking points to qualify for the season-ending tournament for the sixth straight year. Murray was the defending US Open champion but lost to Swizerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka in the final eight.

“I’ve played some of my best tennis in front of my home crowd at Queen’s and Wimbledon this year so hopefully I can keep up that run of form at The O2 in November,” said Murray. “It will be great to compete in London again for the first time since winning Wimbledon. It’s a key focus for me for the rest of the season and I’ll do everything I can to give myself the best chances of winning it. The atmosphere there is always special – to win it would be the perfect way to finish the season.”

The 26-year old now joins Spain’s Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic of Serbia who have already qualified for the elite eight-man event.

Murray is a three-time semifinalist at the ATP World Tour finals, having reached this far in Shanghai (2008), London (2010, 2012). He’s aiming to become the first British-born player to win the title.

Also qualifying for the year-end ATP World Tour doubles event are US Open doubles titlist Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek. Runners-up Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares also booked their places in the year-end event. The first ones to qualify were brother Mike and Bob Bryan.
