Andy Murray pulls out of Thailand Open 2013

The organizers of the Thailand Open 2013 announced that world number three Andy Murray has pulled out of the ATP 250 indoor hardcourt event which is scheduled to start on September 23.

The organizers stated via the tournament’s official website, Murray’s management team has informed them that the Wimbledon 2013 champion will be undergoing a “surgical procedure this coming week.” Murray’s team will be releasing a press release about this development in a short while.

Murray is a former Thailand Open champion, having won the event in 2011.

“Next week Andy is set to undergo minor back surgery in an effort to clear up a longstanding back problem,” the statement read.

“The issue flared up during the Italian Open this year when Andy was forced to retire and he sought advice from a range of specialists. After recently playing on hard courts and clay, Andy once again sought medical advice about solving the issue once and for all. The aim is to be fully fit for the new season.”

The surgery is reportedly a minor one on his lower back. It can be remembered that Murray pulled out of the French Open tournament due to lingering back problems but came back on tour with an impressive run at the Wimbledon tournament, winning the title in the process and ending Britain’s 77-year long wait for a male champion for the grasscourt Slam event.
