Angelique Kerber sweeps past Caroline Wozniacki to reach Toray Pan Pacific Open final

Fifth-seed Angelique Kerber of Germany progressed to the final of the Toray Pan Pacific Open on Friday after defeating seventh-seed and 2010 champion Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the semifinals 6-4, 7-6. The German will face Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic in the final on Saturday.

“The match was very close, and it’s always tough to play a very close friend, but I’ve been playing very well this whole week and I’m really happy to be in the finals here for the first time,” Kerber said. “I have good memories of the semifinals here last year and I’m excited for tomorrow now.”

Wozniacki remains upbeat despite the loss.

“I’ll take a lot of positives with me from this week,” Wozniacki said. “I was fighting out there as hard as I could, not just today but throughout the whole week, and I just came up a little bit short today. But I have a lot of things to work on for next week in Beijing now – we have another big week ahead.”
