Bojana Jovanovski ends Zhang’s run, wins WTA Ningbo title

Serbia’s Bojana Jovanovski won the Yinzhou Bank International Women’s Tennis Open in Ningbo, China on Friday by defeating Guangzhou Open champion Zhang Shuai of China in the final of the WTA 125k Series tournament.

Both players have each won titles in the past two weeks with Jovanovski winning the Tashkent Open tournament two weeks ago and Zhang securing her first WTA-level title in Guangzhou last weekend.

It was a tough three set match but in the end it was Jovanovski who won in three sets 6-7, 6-4, 6-1.

“Zhang Shuai is a great player – she played great this week and the tournament before in Guangzhou too,” Jovanovski said. “I think it was a really difficult match today. It’s really tough to play against a friend. I was just trying to be fair on the court and play my game, and I’m happy to win this title.

“I was maybe just a little bit better and had a little bit more power in the end. But she played great.”

Jovanovski will have little time to celebrate the victory as she heads to Beijing for the China Open which begins on Monday.
