China’s Li Na receives 2013 US Open Sportsmanship Award

China’s Li Na was named 2013 US Open Sportsmanship Awardee on Thursday, September 5. The US Open gives the Sportsmanship Award for deserving male and female tennis players. The men’s recipient this year is world number four David Ferrer of Spain.

The award is given to the tennis professional player who demonstrate excellence in sportsmanship through the US Open Series and the US Open. USTA Immediate Past President Jon Vegosen presented the award to Li.

“As one of the most successful and respected players on tour, Li embodies what a champion truly is,” said USTA Chairman, CEO and President Dave Haggerty. “We couldn’t be happier to honor her with the US Open Sportsmanship Award.”

As a recipient of the award, Li will have the opportunity to give the $5,000 donation to the charity of her choice. The Sportsmanship Award made its debut in 2012 with twins Bob and Mike Bryan receiving the award as the men’s winner and Samantha Stosur of Australia as the women’s winner.
